The following are three addresses by Dr. Andrew Purves, Professor of Pastoral Theology at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. These talks were given at the Presbyterians For Renewal Christian Life Conference in Montreat, NC, July 1-4, 2006. The theme of the conference, and so the theme of Prof. Purves' talks, was "No Other Name," building on Acts 4:13: " Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
"No Other Name": Part I
In the first of three talks on the theme of "No Other Name," Prof. Purves reflects on Acts 4:1-6 and the centrality of the person of Jesus for Christian faith and life. Purves discusses the nature of truth in contemporary culture, ranging from misguided popular notions on both the cultural "left" and the cultural "right." For Christians, the "ultimate truth is not an idea...The ultimate truth is a person, and his name is Jesus. That is the staggering Christian claim."

"No Other Name": Part II
In the second of three talks, Prof. Purves reflects on the passage beginning with Acts 4:11, where Peter says, speaking of Jesus, “there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved." What's in a name anyway? In a clearly Spirit-filled moment at the Christian Life Conference, Purves pursues an answer to this question, expounding on the singular saving Lordship of Jesus Christ.

No Other Name, Part III
Working from Acts 4:23-31, Prof. Purves proclaims the truth that salvation is by Christ alone and that all of our ministry is a participation in the ministry of Jesus Christ. Purves challenges all of us to be Christian ministers who realize that our salvation and the expansion of the Kingdom of God depend not on our own strength or best efforts but on the grace of the living and reigning Lord Jesus Christ, for "there is no other name by which we must be saved."
